A quick look at the training on offer

Just how do we help you develop your skills so speedily? You’ll receive on-the-job training by having access to a skilled and diverse group of people, some of whom have worked in Royal Mail for a long time.

Further support

We also know that any new employee benefits from a network of support when they join the organisation. Therefore you’ll receive support and guidance from a range of different people across the business;

You’ll be allocated a Work Based Coach who is an experienced Royal Mail employee who will work alongside you at a local office. They’ll play a crucial role in your induction and help you to make the most of what you’ve learnt when you’re back within the operation centre.

You’ll also be assigned a mentor, who will be a more senior employee of Royal Mail and who will be there to help with information, support and guidance with any elements of your career development.

On top of all of this, you’ll be able to ‘buddy up’ with an apprentice from a previous intake, meaning you’ll get to speak to someone who has gone through the scheme already, and can offer insight and advice that’s genuinely helpful.

You’ll also meet up regularly with the other apprentices that started at the same time as you – good news if you’re looking for support, advice, or someone to hang out with at the weekend!

Out on the job

Whether you’re working full or part-time hours, you’ll be working shifts, which means an early start (typically 7am), or a late finish (typically 10pm). However, don’t let that put you off – many of our employees find that the shift system fits in around their personal and social lives and many choose to work part-time hours as a way of creating greater work-life balance.

Working in a mail centre can often be physically demanding and repetitive, involving carrying or lifting heavy bags or trays or pushing trolleys full of mail. It may involve sorting mail by hand, and you may also have to stand or walk for long periods of time.

Delivering mail can mean walking for anything between three and five hours, often covering distances of up to eight miles a day, either by bike or on foot so you’ll be keeping fit, even while you work.

Back at base

You’ll be provided with a base at one of our mail centres or delivery offices during your time on the scheme although you will need to be quite flexible with regards to travelling around your local area.

"Royal Mail have invested so much time and effort into my development and I have great respect for what they do. I've no doubt there will be plenty more opportunities for me here."
